Hand Me Ups

I recently took on our overstuffed garage, attempting to pare down the clutter by sifting through the old clothes, toys and home decor that collect in there and ultimately separated everything I was ready to part with into two distinct piles—one for donation, the other for resale. Though resale is labor intensive, there’s folding everything, finding a spot to resell at, shlepping the bags and of course, putting your name on the requisite list to wait (sometimes hours!) for some Gen Z-er to thumb through your old shmatahs while they decide if anything of yours feels 90’s or ironic enough to take. It can easily turn into a painful waste of time, or you could leave with a satisfyingly empty blue Ikea bag and a pocket full of cash. I’ve had both experiences. And then there’s the ever-present risk of amassing a full cart of second-hand finds while you wait for your turn that equal the amount you will earn in sales scenario— really more of a swap than a purge—which is exactly what recently happened to me. So if you’d rather save your Saturday, but still want to reap the rewards of (higher-end) thrifting, below are a few pieces that are inspired by my Crossroads spree, via the flea markets available at your fingertips…Ebay, The RealReal, Rebag and Vestaire Collective. And though the price point is undoubtedly higher than if you scoured the racks in person at your local consignment shop, you do save yourself precious time, disappointment if nothing catches your eye and the awkward pain of a resalesperson passing over the clothes you used to love and now have to shlep back to the car.
